FIRES....but we are safe

Yesterday afternoon the brush fires hit close to home. I was at school when I found out that they were evacuating the local high school and one elementary school. Peter was at home, and he called me in a panic at about 2 pm....telling me that the sky was filling with smoke and he could see flames from down the street. I rushed home, learning that the fires were only about a mile from our house. We are lucky that the wind was blowing the way it was, or else the fires would have spread toward us. They were springing up all over, jumping from lot to lot, house to house. They did call for evacuations from houses just 1/2 mile down the road from us. Road closures made it hard for Gary and Ben to get home from school. We stayed in the house all night, listening to the sirens, helicopters and watching things unfold in the news. School was closed in Palm Bay for today, but Gary and Ben had to go to school. Peter was so upset by the turmoil, that he could not face school...he is worried. This morning, we see little smoke and blue skies. It is a beautiful day. Winids are due to pick up in the afternoon....threatening to rekindle the fires.
Jody and Michael came to hang out with us. We took a drive around town to see the damage. All I can say is that there are lots of lucky people....and many others who have damage to their homes. There are still many people with no power, and we saw people packing their belongings to leave. We saw lots of smoking areas, and lots of areas still in flames. There has not been a decision on whether or not we will have school tomorrow...but they are meeting and will know soon.
The saddest part of the story is that the fires are believed to be set by someone with Molotov Cocktails. Hopefully, they will catch the jerk(s) who did this and no lives will be lost.
Hug your family a little tighter tonight!
